LEAF – Systemic improvement of laboratory efficiency and sustainability
Part 3/3: Scientific laboratories are extremely energy and materials intensive. Burgeoning efforts have been arising to improve their efficiency and sustainability. To explore this Efficiency Exchange will be sharing a 3 part-series on the topic. Part 1 will examine the current state of Green Lab efforts. Part 2 will discuss the importance of research quality, and how the crisis of reproducibility is affecting sustainability/efficiency. Finally, Part 3 will introduce a new tool named LEAF, and how a group of research-intensive institutions are working together to address these areas

Embedding efficiency and sustainability in scientific research
Scientific research is vital to medicine and many other fields, but it can have negative effects on the environment. Martin Farley of King's College London says universities must adopt more efficient practices in research for the benefit of the environment - and their bottom line.
Developing efficient and sustainable buildings
A sustainable building is usually an efficient one and when new build and refurbishment projects are designed with future decades in mind, they can save money in running costs, maintenance and redevelopment. With this in mind, the University of Edinburgh is developing guidance on how building and redevelopment projects should be conducted as Andrew Arnott explains.
Martin Farley: ‘my work should never harm the science, but rather aims to improve...
Straddling the disciplines of facilities management and scientific research support, the sustainable labs co-ordinator is an emerging role in universities. Rosie Niven meets Martin Farley, who became the first such appointment in the UK when he was hired by the University of Edinburgh and has since moved to King’s College London to take on a similar role.
16 – 17 September: Supporting World Class Science conference: Leeds
Booking is now open for S-Lab's Supporting World Class Science conference, focusing on all aspects of laboratory design, management and use, which will appeal to managers, researchers and teachers, estates, facilities, procurement, technical and other support staff. Many of the sessions are drawn from the shortlisted entries for the 2015 S-Lab Awards.
Do you speak laboratory?
The S-Lab: Supporting World Class Science programme aims to improve laboratory efficiency and effectiveness in all dimensions, including scientific value, resource efficiency and staff well-being. S-Lab director Peter James discusses the crucial role of estates and facilities in supporting these objectives.
The efficient lab – maximising the use of scientific research equipment
The S-Lab programme aims to improve laboratory efficiency and effectiveness in all dimensions, including scientific value, resource efficiency and staff well-being. Director Peter James discusses the laboratory good practice and improvement ideas that that have emerged from the S-Lab award scheme and events.
Laboratory equipment event launched by S-Lab
A conference in June will focus on using laboratory equipment more effectively and efficiently and to build better connections between users, buyers, suppliers and others to support further improvement. The event, organised by S-Lab, takes place in Bristol on 17 June.
